·  What does Jiko Ryu mean?

Jiko is Japanese for "oneself" and Ryu means "Artistic School"
So the name of this school is the "School of oneself"

·  How long will it take me to get my black belt?

Each student can learn only as much as he/she is ready to learn. On average though, with dedication and hard work you can obtain your black belt within 5 to 7 years.

·  Once I get my black belt am I finished learning the Martial Arts?

No.
The Martial Arts is a lifetime study. Once you have learned the basics then this is where the "Art" in "Martial Arts" comes into play and the art becomes an extension of your inner self and expression.

·  Will I have to compete in tournaments?

Yes & No
We do not compete in a lot of tournaments. Everyone is encouraged to compete in atleast one, but no one is forced to enter.
On the other hand, Any student who wishes to recieve a Black Belt must have competed in a few tournaments for the experience.

·  What do you mean when you say \"Mind,Body and Spirit\"?

As you train, your physical body will become stronger and you will learn to use your body in new ways. In order to do this you must start to think on a different level than you do now so you grow mentally. As you build your physical and mental abilities many of the barriers to personal growth will disappear allowing you to grow as a person.

In the higher levels Philosophy is a big part of the training. Spirituality does not mean "religion" it means the ability for your inner self to grow and develop, to become a better person.

·  What is Shu Ha Ri?

Shu Ha Ri is a phrase used in Japanese to describe the three stages of ones development. Shu (to protect or to obey), the first phase, describes the first steps; the acquisition of knowledge. Ha (to frustrate) describes the internalisation of that knowledge, making the leap from learning a system to using it in a natural way. Ri (Freedom), the last, describes mastery of the system, making it your own and going beyond the limits of the system by pushing the envelope. These stages are seen as the natural path of development and are an integral part of any learning process.
